Yesterday Acclaim Games announced that The Chronicles of Spellborn, released just three months ago, will undergo a period of re-development and become a micro-transaction driven game. In the age-old blame game between developers and publishers, who deserves to take the fall for tCoS's failure?

Some insights from our own occasional brush with the game's troubled history and speculation on what's in store for tCoS post-F2P in today's Loading... Spell(re)born.

Nope I agree with you. I wouldnt be surprised at all if it was leaked that Acclaim had sabotaged the game so they could make it f2p. Acclaim should go down the tubes with Spellborn. Its a craptacular company that has produced nothing that I know of.

Although Acclaim did contribute to the fall it all started long before that when Spellborn International Ltd. was unable to find a publisher for its game. So they settled for Frogster and later Acclaim. The outcome of that choice was almost predictable. Almost, because it still could have gone the other way, but Frogster nor Acclaim was really committed to this game. From day one Frogster made clear that for the Asian market they would go for a micro-payment model. The only alternative that might have saved the game was never to make those deals but self-publish, but that would have taken nerve and more money. I think SIL is the one to blame here and maybe its investors, but we will never know for sure.
