Exclusive Interview with 38 Studios' R.A. Salvatore
Talking games and game development with fantasy writing legend, R.A. Salvatore.
The act of creation is thrilling. Whether you're a painter, musician, actor, or writer, making a world come to life in a particular medium is an amazing experience. So imagine that you're creating an entire world - top to bottom - that will be filled with thousands (if not millions) of people that are creating their own individual stories. Intimidating? You bet.
But if there's anyone that can do it, 38 Studios' R.A. Salvatore certainly has the credentials to make it happen. Every so often, we sit down with R.A. to see how the story and history of Copernicus is progressing. While the studio still can't state specifics, there certainly are some hints in Salvatore's discussion. Check it out!

Ten Ton Hammer: How are you changing things compared to other MMOs? In other current MMOs, you feel like the hero in the end, but at the same time there are some godlike characters in the world, like Thrall or the Lich King in World of Warcraft. You might end up killing them eventually, but at the same time, as a player, you still don't feel quite as powerful as these characters. Are you taking a different tact on that than other MMO's?
Salvatore: Yes. At the beginning of the MMO, certainly, you're going to see these characters. They're going to be impressive in their animations and their equipment and you know they'd kick your butt, but you're going to be one of them as our game goes along. I really can't get into too much detail about the way we're trying to let you tell your story in our world, but suffice it to say that paramount among it is the ability of players to influence their environment.
Pure awesome!! I can not WAIT for that game to release! He has to be one of the most gifted fantasy writers ever and if his talent for writing can somehow translate into his MMO then it will be one amazing game.
On a side note.. Since TTH obviously has the connection with Mr. Salvatore it would sure be sweet if he were to come off some beta keys when the time comes You know.. for some proper testing by proper fans and all.

I have never been a fan of his written work as far as his novels go (just not my style of things), but it great to see that the 38 Studio guys are building a world from the ground up and fleshing out the races and lore etc. and building a game around it.
Sounds awesome! This is definitely an MMO worth keeping an eye on.
I had an experience in EQ similar to R.A. I was dueling with a paladin friend of mine, when suddenly my screen turned black. I panicked and thought my computer broke. As I learned shortly after, she had just cast a blind spell on me.
And it's a good thing that there wasn't a camera filming me when that happened. I can imagine the look on my face when everything went black.

Haha.
I know exactly what you mean, I had the same experience in AO (one of the first MMOs I REALLY played). A Nanotechnician (basically a wizard) cast a Blind on me and left me thinking something went wrong with my PC.
I kept fiddling with the options of the game trying to lower resolution, change detail settings etc while the game faded in an out as the NT kept blinding me.
Of course I eventually found out that it simply required me to turn up my brightness and contrast settings to max to be able to distinguish shapes in the gloom!
Very enjoyable read & interesting to gain a little insight on the kind of depth they are putting into the backstory.
One of the titles I truly anticipate is this one, I just hope they steer away from a "cartoony" graphic style & the combat has complexity & depth to it.
What comes across here, to me anyway, is the beauty of artistic creation and the excitement it generates (Sal's Little-Boy-Wonderment look). It's beautiful.
