How LEGO Universe Can Match the Success of Free Realms
SOE's Casual MMO Has a Head Start on LEGO Universe
With Free Realms taking over his household, Danny "Ralsu" Gourley had almost forgotten that NetDevil is hard at work on a LEGO MMO titled LEGO Universe. The building block dynamic has mass market appeal, but SOE's game has a lengthy head start. Ralsu examines some ways NetDevil can succeed by employing the same strategies used by SOE:

Just as Free Realms characters change appearance depending on the job being performed, LEGO Universe characters will need to exhibit the same flair when moving between tasks. While I have run races in LEGO Star Wars, the MMO will need to let me don a special racing outfit to match the feeling of pride I get with Free Realms.
Man, that's sad to hear. You were one of the very few guys who wrote about F2P mmo's that did it well and actually enjoyed what you were doing. Gonna miss your list.
The Top Free MMOs is going on indefinite hiatus with the completion of this week’s article. The truth is that I have only three months left to write for Ten Ton Hammer (my decision), and I have too many things I want to accomplish. To get as much done as possible, I am retiring the list.
Where are you going exactly?

After my departure, perhaps another writer will bravely step forward to pick up where I left off in this important community service (Hey, if you don’t think it’s community service, you try playing Nostale!).
I sure hope so. I need to know what's crap and what isn't.

I understand that it takes up a lot of your time but it's a link that I come read every week.
Hey, thanks for reading!

Thanks. I really have enjoyed playing F2P games. Yeah, some are complete garbage, but there are some real gems out there!

I've been working two jobs now since I began working for Ten Ton Hammer in February 2006. It's been two full time jobs since June 2006 (75-80 hours per week on average). I just need to scale back to one job so I can be a better father and husband.
I, too, greatly enjoyed reading your F2P articles. In fact, just about the only reason I visit tentonhammer.com is to occasionally peruse the forums and to read your article.
As to why you're leaving, I can certainly appreciate that, being a gaming father and husband. Kudos to you
I am curious about Lego Universe, but haven't really followed up on it much. As far as I can tell, it's best bet would be what you mentioned with the ability to build your own stuff.
Though how they will handle usser generated content in a kid's game, I have no clue.

I hope you succeed. The world needs more of them.

Well, I too have enjoyed the top 10 list. It got me curious enough to break by stubborn bias against F2P games. Thanks for that! I am quite enjoying several of them.

Good Luck and thanks for all the lists! The Top 10 has been a regular reading of mine since I first discovered it. It lead me to some good times.
I worked for too many hours, for too many years. You can't get that time back with your family and jobs come and go. Working less means more family time, and now I get to play MMOs with my kids!
