While I mostly steer clear of PUGs, I agree completely with the article that they are a great place to hone your skills. My wife used to love healing them for that reason. I still remember a couple years ago she had 2 people in ST go off and pull a group in one direction, 2 in another, and she enjoyed keeping them all alive. I'd have been pulling my hair out.
As for ninjas, my PUG rule is to assume nothing about loot rules and to click need on anything I can use that's an upgrade for any spec, whether I can use it now or in 3 levels. Because that's what others typically do. If it's obvioius the group is used to more "normal" loot rules where everyone passes and then asks whether they can roll on items, and only asks for items for the role they're currently playing - then I do the same. But if everyone else is clicking "need" on whatever they can use and I clicked "pass", I don't think they're ninjas. I think I should be aware that PUG rules are different. If the tank rolls on something for his dps set, I don't think he's a ninja. I think we wouldn't have a group without him, and if I happen to need the same thing, I just hope I roll higher. Different guilds have different loot rules. Different PUGs, even more so. So I'd define "ninja" carefully. The only thing I avoid re. loot rules in PUGs, and it's common at low levels and among the very young, is people calling in advance which loot is theirs. 4 death knights are going into Ramparts and decide in advance that one of them gets the 2-hander - well, no, if I'm playing a death knight who needs it, that doesn't work for me.
