Default WoW - A Survival Guide for PUGS!

There are not many phrases in the gaming vernacular that strike as much fear and sense of impending doom into the heart of MMORPGERS as one small three letter acronym – PUG.

Quote:
Surviving and thriving in a PUG can earn you some great friends and get you a great reputation on your server. Don’t be afraid to jump into a PUG now and then to expand your circle of friends and hone your skills. Remember to always set your goal, recruit a tank and healer first and use your available tools to maximize your chances for success.

You my friend are a glutton for punishment!

I would say that the quality of PUGs has gone up over the years, but I don't know if that is due to better players or nerfed-content. During vanilla WoW and even BC I never pugged (after some horrific evenings of pugtastic hell), but I have found myself in more pugs since LK came out and haven't wanted to gouge my eyes out each time. There are still some special times, but hopefully after 4.5 years, people are finally getting the hang of it!

bravo i say... bravo!!

This is exactly why I like doing pugs. The only reason I dont do ONLY pugs is because I despise ninjas (defined as those that take gear that is not for the spec they are PLAYING for that run with out saying otherwise) and they can ruin my day quicker than my mother in law

While I mostly steer clear of PUGs, I agree completely with the article that they are a great place to hone your skills. My wife used to love healing them for that reason. I still remember a couple years ago she had 2 people in ST go off and pull a group in one direction, 2 in another, and she enjoyed keeping them all alive. I'd have been pulling my hair out.

As for ninjas, my PUG rule is to assume nothing about loot rules and to click need on anything I can use that's an upgrade for any spec, whether I can use it now or in 3 levels. Because that's what others typically do. If it's obvioius the group is used to more "normal" loot rules where everyone passes and then asks whether they can roll on items, and only asks for items for the role they're currently playing - then I do the same. But if everyone else is clicking "need" on whatever they can use and I clicked "pass", I don't think they're ninjas. I think I should be aware that PUG rules are different. If the tank rolls on something for his dps set, I don't think he's a ninja. I think we wouldn't have a group without him, and if I happen to need the same thing, I just hope I roll higher. Different guilds have different loot rules. Different PUGs, even more so. So I'd define "ninja" carefully. The only thing I avoid re. loot rules in PUGs, and it's common at low levels and among the very young, is people calling in advance which loot is theirs. 4 death knights are going into Ramparts and decide in advance that one of them gets the 2-hander - well, no, if I'm playing a death knight who needs it, that doesn't work for me.
