The Making Of Update 8 – Extreme Make-Over Hits Player Cities
Ever wonder what kind of process developers go through to make their additions and changes to their game updates? Do the devs actually analyze and ask for input from the player base, or do they just go at it? In this very intriguing developer diary, Star Wars Galaxies' James Michener discusses the cycle he went through to developer the content that was made available to characters in SWG's Game Update 8. If you're a Star Wars fan, this is definitely worth a look!

The first thing I did was to reach out to Cigaran, the City Senator, who represents the community with respect to “City” focused feedback. I immediately contacted him to get his views on what the priorities were in the player’s perspective. I had a list of “to-dos” as always, but needed to get a feel for the community’s perspective, and where they would like to see the update go. I’m amazed at the amount of insight the City Senator was able to provide, which was good considering the size of the list he handed me at the same time!
I came back to the game with the last foray of free invites in January (if I remember correctly). I have to say, transferring to a new server with the free transfer service and all the updates made to the game since I left it after the NGE hit and I have been drawn back into SWG. I always loved how complex and deep many of the systems are in the game. No other MMO can touch the crafting, housing, player cities side of SWG and it is nice to see those systems get updates in the update this article is on and in the upcoming 9th update. I am hopeful for the direction SWG is taking and recommend you give the game a try again. If you liked the game before, yes you will miss many things still victim to the CU/NGE changes, but a lot of that damage has been mitigated and the current dev teams seems very focused (as this article shows) on what the fan base wants.
They can try to mitigate the disaster of NGE all they want, but they already shot themselves in both feet. Thousands of players left never to return, and will never trust SOE again. I think the only way they could get back their old players (or some anyway) and attract new ones is if they reversed NGE somehow.

This game is gonna go under when TOR come out. I don't really see how they can compete. I was not even able to finish the tutorial when I had an SOE account, it was horrible.
