As we waltz into the winter months of 2009, many predictions are still being made as to what shape the industry might take by this year's end. With a fairly diverse group of new MMOGs set to ship sometime this year, we're certainly seeing a shift away from the common fantasy-based settings that currently dominate the market.
Another trend looming just over the horizon is the rise of the console MMOG. While some might remain skeptical that this will ever be embraced by a larger audience, this week Reuben “Sardu” Waters takes a closer look at the concept, specifically at how Champions Online could very well be the game that ushers in a new era for the industry.

Ever since Cryptic first entered the nutty world of MMOG development in 2000, they've consistently taken the industry in new directions. While many of their peers were focused on sharpening virtual swords and scribbling down spellbook code for fantasy settings, Cryptic went and pulled a super hero rabbit out of their hat. City of Heroes not only offered a unique take on the concept of online RPGs, but raised the bar for character customization so high that it still hasn't been surpassed nearly five years later.
Yeah I wont like it if we have to buy a subscription, you already have to pay for xbox live gold to play online.(If you don't pay for gold you can still download content and all but not play any games online, for those that don't have one)

I think that's one point that could either make or break the game as a console title. I simply don't see gold account Live users wanting to fork out a second sub fee, since it's an all inclusive deal for every other game they play online. If they can play the game straight out of the box then chances are more people will give the game a try.
Should that be the case it still makes me wonder what the sub for PC users would be, since a gold account on the 360 is far cheaper than the industry norm for MMOG subs.
Hi! New to the forums, but I wanted to give my input into this, as I am into both MMO's and console gaming...
Some of us that really want to play CO will still pay both a standard fee, and a Live subscription. In fact, many Live members pay for the year, and after that there is no added expense. I'm already paying a monthly WoW sub, on top of Live. Of course, if they were both in one, I wouldn't complain. But I'm too stoked for CO to not pay both seperately.
I think the biggest hurdle for 360 gamers will be HDD space. My 360 has an old 20 gig, so I'm going to need an upgrade for that. How about MS and Cryptic/Atari release a 60 gig & CO disc combo pack? They could even through the chat pad in for $100+!
What about text communication? I know I don't always want to be in voice chat with people. Can you imagine the spam in general channels if it's nothing but voice? So how are they going to deal with communication for the 360? Those silly little Xbox keypads? No thanks. And s others have stated, pay for Live gold and a sub fee? Uh, no.
So untill they do away with duplicate fees and consoles come standard with mice and keyboards I don't see console MOGs being mainstream anytime soon.
Everyone is forgetting that the live subscription is for the renting and maintains of the servers that Microsoft have...
The online play with the silver and gold accounts is just a gimmick to make people pay for the service to play online. if you want to play online you pay the 4 dollars a month for maintenance fees (that’s what I’m calling it) or you don’t Gimmick.
Paying MMOs are a totally different beast.. And people have to understand that. This is about the p2p and not f2p.. f2p is a totally different mmo and has a different way of life.
- A person who plays on pc has to pay the cost of internet and MMO.
- A person who plays on 360 has to pay cost of internet, Live, and MMO
- A person who plays on PS3 has to pay cost of internet and MMO
Hopefully with these MMOs that are cross platform you will only have to pay one MMO fee and that the accounts can be played on either a PC or console.
no matter what you will have to pay the fees. So just be prepared if you’re on the 360 to pay the extra live fee.. Thats not going to go away
