The world of Norrath has been home to so many over the years it's mind boggling to consider a sequel so popular it's on a fifth expansion. The Shadow Odyssey brings a number of exciting features to EverQuest 2 which include mission based instance dungeons, more Achievements, a new overland zone, and much more. Will it be enough to hang on to the veterans and even bring back former players? We dive right in and provide a verdict just inside.

I can hear the question forming on your lips now: “Is there really just one new zone in the entire expansion?” Not quite my friend as there are an entire new series of instances to take into consideration. Included are seven different locations that will take you everywhere from the Commonlands to the Loping Plains. At each of these locations are two or three different instance selections that provide a variety of options for your grouping pleasure. If that wasn't enough, the instances will progress in difficulty and believe me when I tell you that these can become challenging.
Nice article RadarX and its good to see you back in game!
Just one correction, and it might help some of the folks here that are interested in the new instanced zones. Not all of the new instances scale from 50 - 80. Someone on the official forums thoughtfully charted all the new instances with their level requirements and the level of difficulty here. I hope this helps out your readers.
I, for one, agree with RadarX's assessment. If you love the MMO part of MMORPG's, TSO is a very fun expansion and offers a lot to current and returning players.
Aboslutely right and thanks for the correction! I honestly couldnt' see much benefit in doing them before 70 unless you are looking for more Tier 6 and 7 content.
Okay...that warning out of way, I still LOVE EverQuest II. No other MMO currently on the market has been able to suck me in, or keep me away from that love.
It is a solid product, visually stunning, and offers the most diverse and unique gaming experience online, to date.
And I'm glad yer playing again Radar. The six of us who refuse to leave it welcome the growth.
correction.. the "7" of us thank you. It's still the best MMO nobody plays.

I gave four friends of mine EverQuest II: The Shadow Odyssey boxes and two thirty day game cards each for Christmas. Not one has yet created an account.

Ouch.. hell, they could have just made an account to seem grateful. I just don't get it, the game gets great reviews. People play and and say.."wow, that is a great game".. then they stop playing. Is there just too many fantasy MMO's out there that it thins the populations?

More like a few million.
I'd say, what, 2-4 million?

In some cases, it's bad experiances, in others, by some ungodly reason they run off to WoW.... Bleh.

Yeah, I don't know what they have going. SOE has always been very guarded about the numbers that they have playing. It's really hard to say. I play on Blackburrow which has always been one of the more populated servers, granted it's not an Antonia bayle, Unrest, or Crushbone amount but it's always been pretty well off. I was on the other night and looking for a friend who plays a few different classes. I couldn't remember all of the names and the spelling so I started to do searches by class and it was pretty discouraging. For instance, there were 28 guardians online from level 1-80. Every search I did yielded less then 40 of each class so yeah, take what you will from that little test.
I personally think the game is very well polished and by far the best PvE game on the market but with zero advertising and very little effort to increase the player base, it's just never taken off like WoW.

For the four friends of mine that I bought the game for, I think it's two things. First and foremost, SOE's bad reputation, and then secondly fantasy MMOG burnout.
