Exclusive Jumpgate Evolution Interview - Grand Combat, Epic Scale
Generating excitement for an upcoming game is often like trying to herd cats. Players might find a game vaguely enticing, but getting those players to join a community and spread interest for a game almost requires a large bit of luck. Whether it was luck or a fancy bit of marketing that did it, the developers at NetDevil have somehow achieved a large amount of interest for their upcoming space shooter MMOG, Jumpgate Evolution, and are now sporting over 150,000 beta applications for their title. Ten Ton Hammer's Cody "Micajah" Bye sat down with Jumpgate Evolution's head man Hermann Peterscheck to get an update on the progress of the game and what to expect from this upcoming MMOG!
Quote:
"Our experience from watching people play the game tells us that people like and respond well to large scale battles, fighting massive enemies, PvP, and then the exploration side of the game," Peterscheck said. "On the subject of exploration, if companies don't have enough diversification in their environments, players burn out even if the mechanics are great. World of Warcraft is very good at making players feel like they're entering a whole new area when they move from zone to zone. We've tried to emulate that and give players completely different areas when they jump from area to area, and it's cool to see players enjoying that experience and saying 'Wow, this is cool! Wow, this is cool!'"
Another really great interview. I'm liking the format of presenting them as an article vs. a direct Q and A by the way. The information still gets across just as well, but with an added layer of depth that makes what would have been a good read a great one.
I'm definitely looking forward to experiencing some of the larger scale ships and battles in Jumpgate, especially with the fast pace of combat etc. Some of the epic fights in Star Wars you mentioned come to mind, as well as some of my favorite moments from BSG.
From the screens and videos I've seen so far it does seem like they've fully embraced the idea of keeping a distinct visual feel for different areas in the game. I really don't expect anyone will be saying, "I've been to the edge before. It just looks like ... more space." (bonus points for anyone who knows what that quote is from )

Good guess, but unfortunately not the right answer...
Here's a fairly major hint for you though:
"Oh, He robbed from the rich
and he gave to the poor.
Stood up to the man
and he gave him what for.
Our love for him now
ain't hard to explain.
The hero of Canton
the man they call Jayne."

Bah - that was too easy. Either Serenity or Firefly.
