Ok so maybe you don't consider it an MMO, but I really like MMOs and I could have really liked HGL if it hadn't fallen on it's face so bad. I like the concept a lot, I liked the classes, unfortunately, that is about all it had. They never capitalized on a lot of potential. The pseudo random level design was silly the repetitiveness of the instances was insulting, but I still had some fun with it.
Ignoring that this may or may not be a real MMO, did NAMCO do us all a disservice by acquiring the rights to the game only to shutter it 3-6 months later? I think this is crap, but then I'm not the one paying to keep the servers alive. Heck they may only have a few players left for all I know. So does this make you think twice before supporting the next NAMCO game, or is this just business?
That's just the way things go these days, and on an increasing level.
Game developers are spending more money to put in less effort, and that's just now what the industry is crying out for. MMOs had a greater longetivity and were considerably better (my definition) when they only appealed to geeks, nerds, and techies.
How many times have you heard of someone missing old EQ1, UO, or pre-cu SWG?I know I don't go a day without at least hearing/reading it once.
Do you think todays modern 'fast-food' games will garner the same sentiments? I certainly don't. It's common to hear people saying they are looking for a game so they didn't 'have' to play WoW or WAR, and I can understand this. Right now, I've gone back to EQ2 and it's not because I love the game as such, but because there's so much to do that doesn't revolve around killing monsters. Give me a sci-fi mmorpg that sustains me and I'll give you a kidney.
Just realised I was going way off topic there. Sorry about that, I think I made my point somewhere though. lol
Did everyone miss the whole Flagship Studios fiasco from the summer? This was all explained when Flagship went under. I am completely surprised that Hellgate made it this long.
Hanbitsoft is supposedly re-working this title as well as trying to do something with Mythos from what can be translated from the Korean sites but it is just rumor at this point.
One thing is for sure Hanbitsoft ownes the rights to both the Hellgate and Mythos IP but that does not include the original talent involved with these titles so good luck trying to make heads or tails from that stuff.
There is a reason why arcade halls aren't that much big of a succes nowadays, they ignored that.
To be honest i played the game in single mode and after level 5, i already uninstalled it, due to a story that really doesn't connect with you, AI that was suppose to give you the feeling that you were hunted down by hordes of mobs but really didn't do much, together with a deja vu feeling every 5 minutes, you didn't really got the feeling you were progressing.
Sum all that up and you got the feeling you were cleaning the streets of london, rather then a dangerous adventure thru the streets of london, in otherwords it was a 'job' and not a fun one either.
I didn't see it as a MMO at all, I saw it atmost as a game with multiplayer capabilities.
I wonder what will become of Mythos, that was a fun game for the fast gaming fix in between.
I know that Flagship handed it over in its raw code form, but NONE of the team that worked on that code remains. It will likely be some time before anyone can untangle the pieces.
i'll miss it, not that i play it alot...but some days i just dont feel like looking at elves, dwarves and such. between the horrible launch and the repetitiveness of the walls it really isn't shocking. should have either skipped single player mode or spent more time making the walls. hopefully HUXLEY can fill this gap since i did play at least once a week, it was kinda the roughage in my gaming diet (UNREAL being the caffeine).
bummer
