Combat Arms is set to launch on Thursday (Oct. 1) and they have announced the ingame store that players will be able to buy upgrades. This has been hashed out way too many times, so I'll just leave it with this:
In the way Nexon is opening up a good portion of the game to F2P, it appears that people can really try it before investing and I like that. Whether or not I like people being able to buy their way to the top is another topic.
CA is a real FPS game with no dice rolls. That means it is like Halo, or Call of Duty, etc. I suck at those games, so the fact that I could improve my character over time won't really get me over that hump. Nexon has two very successful franchises in Maple Story and Mabinogi, so it would be short-sighted of me to discount their market knowledge. That being said, I don't see this as being a big hit with the traditional MMO crowd.
So F2P and FPS, two great tastes that go great together or just a mess?
There's a big market for it, even big companies are going completely free and try to run of adds.
John Carmack said that for Quake Live there were in the first week over more then half a million sign up for their free browser based (buffed up Quake 3 arena) shooter.(last quakecon from 08)
There is a market for it but if it's big enough is something else and asking people to buy extra content won't work so well, as FPSer if someone gets an unfair advantage over me i can't stand it and many of us are like minded.
Could be a moderate succes depending how well they hold it up and how well their webbased services are (competition/stat/ ranking standings etc)
edit: your link doesn't work correctly, drop the intro.axp in the line.
Its a very fun game to hop on when your short on time.
My only problem so far is they need better hack detection, played the other night and some guy had a god mode cheat

Sorry to break this to you, but Combat Arms was released well over 2 months ago lol.
Oct. 1st was the day they released a new feature in the game, Black market, aka a cash shop where you can buy new characters, melee weapons, K/D ratio reset, clan emblems and all that kinda stuff.
If you are going to work as a writer for a big website like this, you should take the time to research a little more before you post. What do you mean Nexon is opening up a portion of the game to F2P? The whole game IS FREE lol. You can play every level and rank to the top and be the best player without ever using the new cash shop. The shop does not offer good guns or upgrades that are better than the ones you earn free.
Also, You cannot improve your character's stats over time. All you can do is rent weapons and armor for days at a time, and anyone else can also rent the same guns, so if you're no good, you will always be no good unless your actual skill at playing FPS games improves.
Anyway, Combat Arms is a decent FPS, but its full of hackers that use chams(see enemies through walls), aimbots, speed hacking and invincibilty hacks.
Also, the game is not an MMO really, it just allows you to rank up the more you play and earn money after each round. The game is a normal FPS, room based with max of 16 players, but it saves your progress once you logoff is all.

The part you dispute about a portion of the game open for F2P is a mistake that I did not include in the news story just in the forums. My bad, I was mixing up F2P game announcements from the same day.
Thanks for the info though, and I think you are proving my point that the true FPS crowd and MMO crowd don't mix.
As always I appreciate the constructive criticism.
