Default Top Ten Free-to-Play Games September 2008

September 2008 Edition

With another month of free-to-play gaming under his belt, Ten Ton Hammer's Danny "Ralsu" Gourley feels he has seven very solid titles, but he's still searching for three more to round out his Top Ten Free-to-Play Games:
Quote:
My goal for the month of October is to replace at least one of the bottom three games. I'm looking for solid titles with replay value. I wouldn't mind finding something outside the fantasy setting so long as it is not twitchy. At the end of the month, though, I want to be closer to having a list of ten games that I would be willing to play ten hours per week if I had time.

Great list again, Danny. When I first became aware of the list, in general, I wasn't too keen on it, but I've come to understand your approach better. I actually play or have played 3 of the top 5 games as well as a p2p game (WAR).

I read this column every month.

Once again, with regular features like this one, TTH is at the forefront, leading the pack in providing useful information like this for the MMO hobbyist.

Thank you!

You want a list of some of the worst free to play games? Here's a start.

Entropia Universe (put real money in a game that looks this awful?), Furcadia (I don't see how anyone, Furry or not, enjoys this), Hero Online (blah), 9 Dragons (blah), Mu Online (blah), FlyFF (blah), 2 Moons (blah), Dungeon Runners (what do you people see in that game?), Perfect World (besides grinding, Perfect World also offers the ability for characters to make out with each other!).

I don't get paid enough (any) for this so I need to stop bringing up repressed memories of bad games.

I have a soft spot for Archlord... it probably deserves to be on the list but I liked my orc sorceror character and the first twenty levels. I like Archlord because it is the best of the free to play Korean grinders. It is the ultimate offering of a flawed genre. Requim: Bloodymare, Knight Online, etc etc are all the same game and to me Archlord slightly leads the pack.

You want to try another free MMORPG? I used to play Trickster Online, I feel it might fit at spot 10 or so. Roll a Buffalo. I just got an email saying they are offering some sort of bonus to new accounts.

Good free MMOs (by which I mean, ones that I am playing): Atlantica Online (best MMO available in my opinion), Puzzle Pirates, Mabinogi, Trickster

I've also started playing Grand Chase but I'm not sure it qualifies as a MMORPG. It's more like a sidescrolling version of Gauntlet, the old four person dungeon delving arcade game.

Thanks for the list, Vroshnak!

I'll put Trickster on my investigation list.

As for Dungeon Runners, it's just a fun dungeon run with a lot of attitude. You have to like the Diablo style before you can like DR.
