From the article published by the Science Dude, we learn about some of the differences between gamers in China and America. It got me thinking, how is gaming in the rest of the world different from America? As Eddie Izzard would ask "Do you Americans know that there are other countries out there?"
Heck, I though everyone got unlimited bandwidth that was uncensored and played at a desk in their house with hot women bringing them beers. I know that's how I roll.
What have you found in the international gaming scene?
I Must say; I play way to long with american players to notice a difference in my playstyle or behavior and the "usual germans" out there...not that there would be any stereotypical germans.
It goes even that far, that I cant stand to play with germans at all, they seem to whine more in a really whiney way while americans seem to prefer to keep up with a "cool dewd behavior" and act more rude and vulgar.
Otherwise, many german gamers want to be part of the cool kids around the block (or behind the school gym) and adapt to a playstyle they think it looks american
One example, americans like the phrase "taking your lunch money" the german gamers I know, would not use this sentence or even think about it...they would swear and curse while showing of some silly e-pen....morons.
...but maybe I am in the wrong demographic group ...not that I care anyway

It's actually kind of funny that you bring this up. I am a student as the University of South Florida, in my fifth year, and one of my teachers is currently finishing his PhD in Education. His major thesis (in Florida to graduate with a PhD you have to write a full blown textbook called a major thesis, or something like that) is actually based around this very thought. Multi-Cultural Global Perspectives is his degree and he is using what he knows in that regard and combining it with MMOs and how kids and adults use MMOs to learn about other people from around the world, and their cultures through video games. I've already talked with him and asked for a copy of his final works. If he allows me, I'd be happy to share what he has written with whomever would be interested, but I imagine it will be quite an eye full.
For me, I love learning about other people and their cultures through MMOs. I've played with people from all around the world, and actually learned a lot about the Japanese and how they do video games just from playing FFXI. Made some good friends to who have before invited me to visit them in Japan.
I know Hungarian players very well and like in real life, hungarians are always against each other also in games. They take every game (like real life) for an ongoing competition. Some oddities about hungarians:
1. They are very proud and patriotic, so they often add to their names the extension [HU], so everybody knows, they are from hungary. Even in RPGs, where it is very inappropriate.
2. Although they always look for other hungarians, they can't play together, because after 10 minutes they have a big discussion about how the other tries to be better and not being a true hungarian and not helping the other, but distructing the hungarian community.
3. If there is an alpha class in a game (Jedi in preCU SWG), every hungarian tries to be that alpha class, then they hunt eachother and if somebody get caught and killed, he starts to flame, why one hungarian has to hunt and kill another hungarian, instead of playing together and hunt americans or other nationalities.
4. If they form a guild, it always have to have some hungarian reference in their names like "Hungarian Warriors" or such.
5. If they formed a guild, you can be sure that after 2 weeks the guild splits up and some of the members form another guild, because they couldn't play together.
Those are a few things about hungarian players. That's why I don't play with them anymore
I never experienced these things by other nationalities, but hungarians.
What do they mean by the more challenging form of the game. I didn't know there was an option or I would be doing that too. If they mean PVP servers vs PVE servers well I have to agree PVE servers are boring. Both are not challenging at all.
This is kinda contrasting to what I read a while back about the japanese and the resident evil series. They said japanese people preferred less challenging games then americans.
I played with germans, french, dutch, australians, east coast americans, west coast americans, africans, russians, japanese....only besides the ability to talk in english and their knowledge there's none.
Culture differences and all that aside are normal playstyle differences are different from person to person, but i guess if you search hard enough and want to see differences you'll see some even if they are completely incorrect and from the beginning biased obversations.
I'll tell you why chinese play more smart and this has nothing to do what so ever with them being chinese, in asia in general games are seen as a sport, there are gyms, they are supported financially, they got sponsors and so on.
It's just being dealt with there much more professional in asia, therefor it's normal if you have been training to do something all the time, you'll want something more challenging if you work out all the time you aren't going to start working out with less heavy weights all of the sudden, you'll find there's nothing to that aswell.
Sorry, just normal human nature.
That there are more male players is a normal as that's a result from the one child goverment policy, you'll see more females after a decade or so though as they are seen more valuable then males now, again this has nothing to do with them being chinese but everything with their goverment that is communist with some very facistic influences.

....
In a broader light this seems to be true, but still...in all the years I played online games, it really looks that way that the majority of american players are more rude and vulgar...while the majority of germans tend to whine more.
@Acidbaron, while I value your opinions and posts (because they are mostly insightfull and well thought out), here I disagree with you.
You can twist the coin around and around, there are cultural differences that influence gaming behavior.
Its not like, that the usual stereotypical understanding of different cultures is true or something...but there are differences, mostly marginal ..but they are there.
In the end it doesnt matter, if someone is a turd and moron....I just wont play my games with him/her, while I wouldnt care what origin he/she came from.
Oh, a other reason why I cant stand playing with germans would be; that a german localized gameclient seems somewhat wrong to me...speaking about conditioning from my early stages of games I played

I believe they are saying that the Chinese people a much higher percentage of PvP, yes. There is no "hard" mode.
I hadn't seen the information on the Japanese report, I'll see if I can dig it up unless you could PM me a link.
MikeS, I hope you like your beers, or is it bandwidth? Both are good.

There are culture differences, yes. My post while agressive could've been seen that way that i tried to deny that.
My point however was that the big differences the ones pointed out really aren't caused by culture differences.
I guess you can argue however that goverment and such are part of a country culture.
I think as european myself included, those who speak english more fluently doesn't like to hang around their own country men as it pretty much shuts you off from the international crowd.
