Default A first look at the art of Copernicus

We went to Comic Con 2008 expecting the same song and dance from 38 Studios, the Boston-based studio currently developing the fantasy MMORPG Copernicus (working title). With superstar talent like popular fantasy novelist R.A. Salvatore and comic book and toy legend Todd McFarlane aboard, it's hard to not be anxious for a peek behind the curtain. And that's exactly what Director of Creative Development Scott Cuthburtson and newly announced Art Director Thome Ang offered us! Taking two exclusive pieces of artwork (which we're proud to now present to you for the first time), the 38 Studios crew explained the vision behind what their signature art style.

This game is pretty intriguing. So far, I like the unique art direction. I'm going to be keeping a close eye on it as it develops, as much as I hate becoming a true believer too early. (Oh, Vanguard, you've made me so bitter.)

What do you guys think? Is there room for another fantasy game in the MMOG space? What do you think of the art style you've seen so far?

There is room for a other Fantasy game, thats for sure...but what are the ins and outs, well that has to be seen.

I looked at the picture "crops" ...it is an amazing picture with golden light softly touching the tree and and the wheat.

The cavern...well it is a cavern, nothing fancy but "nice"...overall I was impressed of the "mood" in the croop picture, but there is not much flesh hence a bone to chew my gaming fangs on.

Given the impressive list of people involved on the project I can't help but be interested in seeing what kind of game they collectively come up with.

Two mini-factoids from the Land of Sardu:

- I still have my signed copy of the first issue of the McFarlane Spiderman comic on the wall in my office ...

- Among many other bizarre items I've collected over the years I have 2 original cells from Alice in Wonderland (a few frames before Alice finds the Mome Raths )

The first speaks for itself. The second I only mention because I've always been a big fan of "classic" Disney art style. From the concept art shown so far, I can easily see the influence which I think is a good thing.

As far as the fantasy setting goes, I still don't see it as being overplayed at all. If anything, seeing the exact same mechanics in every new game that's released is what's getting old for me, regardless of setting. Mind you I really do like the formula that's been iterated upon by most games since EQ hit store shelves, but any new additions to it keep seemingly expanding on it sideways rather than boldly forward.

That is exactly how I see it, Fantasy is such a wide field...with much much more than the usual stale setings...in gaming enviroments.

Fantasy is after all, one of the oldest arts of humankind...
...well, let see how a new vision will unfold and new dreams will be born.

Away with the hollow stagnant Fantasy, there is enough to take from to build something new.

So far so good on this game, as far as I'm concerned. Thanks for talking with Scott and Thom - they're two really passionate people and I'm glad they had a chance to discuss their artwork with the world. It looks terrific!
