DC Universe Online First Glimpse Video with Jens Andersson
DC Universe Online is playable for the first time at San Diego Comic Con 2008, and our cameras were on hand to capture the action. Join Lead Designer Jens Andersson for a look inside the game and it's action-oriented combat system and superhero abilities like tossing cars and buses at your foes and super-speeding up the side of buildings. It's a 6 minute introduction to one of the biggest (and nicest) surprises of Comic Con 2008!
I got to talk to Jens at the SOE Block Party tonight. The game is going to be multi-platform, PC and PS3. Phil got to play for a bit. He said it was superb. It looked like a blast and was completely intuitive to play.
There were six-year-olds playing it without instruction. So far, it looks very well done.

Putting the "MO" in MMOG
Being another one of the non-MMO style combat games (i.e. "action game" targeting/hitting with no dice rolls) do you guys think this will be another Auto Assault or Tabula Rasa where the community aspect is very difficult to cultivate. Apparently he didn't hear that question when Boomjack asked it, he went off on marketing tangent #4.
I'm curious if typing while being in an action game can lend itself to grouping or even being social. So far it sounds like a single player game played in a massive setting. Of course there is always voice, but for me, I don't voice with people I don't know (maybe I'm the antisocial one?).
It looks good though.

Reason: typos a plenty this morning, need more coffee

There wasn't an opportunity to actually see the social interaction. The game is still a very long way out and because it will also be on the PS3 I imagine that voice is what they are focusing on. Note made...I'll ask next time I see them, or maybe YOU will Medeor as you will see them before me at SoE Fan Faire!
Man, I can't wait to see a picture of Medeor standing next to Jens. I'm six feet tall and if you watch the video, which I KNOW you have, then you'll see how tall Jens is.

There won't be a video of me interviewing him as I would be eye level with his belt area and that would just be plain embarrassing. I'm guessing he plays center on the company basketball team.
I'm really looking forward to more info on this game, but you are right, I get a little ahead of myself on a game that is due to ship when my 5 year old starts driving. And yes, I'm really looking forward to Fan Faire next month, there is going to be a ton of goodness (EQ2 expansions, The Agency, Free Realm, DC, and a player to be named later apparently)
AoC is still supposed to be the first real MMO-to-console crossover right (that is still going to happen yes?)? DC may get a front row seat to watch those fireworks and change accordingly.
One nifty thing I can say about the console crossover as it stands now... you can play using the PS3 controller (on a PC) or the keyboard / mouse. Here's the cool part - unless I was mistaken, the game senses that the controller has been picked up (using the built-in accelerometer) and channels gameplay controls to the keyboard and configures the keyboard for chat (e.g. WASD keys type "wasd" rather than move the character when the controller is in use). Nicely done.

I can't tell if that is the coolest thing ever or if it is yet another part of Big Brother's master plan to know and control everything we do!
Actually, I'd never even thought about that possibility, and that sounds awesome. I hope it really works. I'm somewhat of a klutz with controllers though, it might be comedy to watch me use a controller and keyboard, yikes!
