KOTOR Online Editorial - A Guide to the Old Republic Jedi
With EA's announcement of the Knights of the Old Republic MMOG, many gamers felt their pulse quicken and their eyes dilate. This is the game many Star Wars fanatics have dreamed about, and it is finally coming to pass. Yet many gamers still question certain aspects of the game and how it could work as an MMOG. How could their be so many Jedi running around in the universe? Will there be more than two Sith to fight at any given time?
Thankfully, the future is much brighter than many people realize. In this new editorial series, Cody "Micajah" Bye explores the basics of the Knights of the Old Republic backstory and what kind of universe players will be exploring in this upcoming game. With his first article, Cody jumps into the fray by discussing the one topic players care about the most: the Jedi Knights.

The question that does remain is whether or not Bioware will ask players to “work” to make their characters into full-blown Jedi. Almost all of the Star Wars lore points directly at characters – even the most Force talented – requiring at least a bit of training in order to unlock their full potential. If Bioware opts to go this route, we may see players opting to create a variety of different characters before diving into the “Jedi” role. One particularly interesting facet of Jedi training Bioware might follow is the idea of Jedi Masters and their Padawans. Much like a "mentoring" system in other games, Bioware could definitely use this system to help new characters attain higher ranks within the game itself.
1.Describing how the combat system of a game works isn't an easy question to answer and even harder for us without hands on experience to visualize what you mean by it, so what game or games combat system can be compared to it?
2.The Jedies and Siths a common thing or a rare breed? In otherwords can it be picked at the start or is it something you work towards or is it perhaps even limited to storyline NPC's?
3.Will there be 'Factions' picked at the start or 'Standings' based on the choices you make? Also how much effect will your choice or choices have on your ability to travel to places, NPC's: Just different chat or even unable to acces services and effect on the game world.
4.How is space travel going to work are we going to be able to fly freely around in space, is it just some sort of loading screen, is it an auto pilot system where we see the actual travel much like in WoW or something else?
5. Crafting, while without a doubt you want to make something unique what game would you say is the biggest source of inspiration regarding this feature.
6. Ingame ecomony fully player ran or does the game and NPC shops sell the majority of the items, also will there be item sinks such as decay or durability.
7. Where in the KOTOR timeline does the mmo take place?
8. PvP will it be completely optional or does it play a big part in the game or will you just create special PvP servers for those?
9. How much instancing will there be? Will it just be used as a crowd limited tool to make the game run smoother for everyone or will it also be applied for every "dungeon" and indoor or perhaps even outdoor encounter? How important is the "massive multiplayer" feeling in kotOR?
10. In the early enthusiastic stage of development, how big do you hope that the game world(or galaxy) will be?
11. Will their be large scale ground and/or space battles?
12. Are there plans to have player owned structures? If yes in space or just on planets are they going to be single player structures or guild only or perhaps even both? Also will they be just community meeting points or trade spots or will they even be capturable or destroyable by other players thru PvP?
13. What is the primary goal of the game? To create a living breathing galaxy filled with player made and story based conflicts or a more jump in and have fun mmo without too many real consequence. In short a sandbox or themepark MMO.
If i made any spelling errors or typos let me know that's all for now, unless something else pops in.
Hehe - I meant more "background" type questions - things that I could address with simple research - that I could answer. Bioware is still hush hush about the whole thing, especially game mechanics.
That said - I think there are a few questions in there that I can help answer. I'll see what I can do!
Ah, well the original post stated any questions or concerns about the KotOR mmo
Found it a bit odd as the whole article was about the background story, oh well i got a list of questions i want to have answerd in the future then ^^.
To answer questions of Jedi/Sith lore and history one only needs to look at Bioware's original KOTOR to answer nearly every question.
Bioware is so good at story telling, and KOTOR features such an impressive amount of lore I have absolutely zero fears about this upcoming game.
One thing I would like to see are Mandalorians. The Mandalorians were a formidable foe, even to the armies of the Jedi. It was not until Revan and Malik joined the conflict, using "less then standard" techniques and strategy that the tide of the war turned to the Republic's favor and the Mandalorians were defeated.
I think the perfect setting for the KOTOR MMO would be around the exact same time as the original game. You have an epic war between Jedi and Sith, and the possibility of plenty of non-Jedi contributers such as smugglers, combat droids, Mandalorians, etc. etc.
Why not have the game takes place just before the events of KOTOR? Before Revan is captured. This was the turning point in the Republic's war against the Sith. Lord of the Rings Online has proven through their success that you can have a game run parallel or in a similar timeline as an already established story.
So many possibilities for this game... so few answers. I for one have faith in Bioware. KOTOR, Mass Effect, Baulder's Gate... They know what they are doing.

See - that's the kicker Heero - there were PLENTY of Sith far more powerful than either Revan or Malak. The Sith certainly aren't as sparse as either of those games makes them out to be.
Good point on the Mandalorians - I'm going to do a bit of research there because another Jedi - either Exar Kun or Ulic Qel-Droma - defeated their leader as well. I'll have to check back with you on that....probably in its own editorial.
