Default Perfect World: Exclusive Combat Video

Flashy Enough?

In his first impression of Perfect World, Danny "Ralsu" Gourley noted that combat wasn't as flashy as he has seen in other games. The magic spell effects were minimal in the early going, but the swordplay was impressive despite incongruous combat sounds.

But who is Ralsu to judge? Ten Ton Hammer readers should see for themselves, so Ralsu captured some video of combat in Perfect World.

No offense, but that was about the weakest example of combat footage I have ever seen. Perfect World is an excellent game, actually, and that makes the combat look entirely lame. What is that you're using to demonstrate combat, a level ONE magician? I mean seriously, you showed ONE spell....the very FIRST one you get as a magician. The combat in the game, in REALITY, looks pretty awesome.

Why don't you LEVEL that character and show an example of a combination of about 5 or 6 spells and kill something that takes more than 1 second to kill? Do you hate the game, or something, and just made this to bolster your opinion? Because it's surely not a very inclusive or accurate representation of the game combat.

Funny thing about my time with Perfect World is that I can't deal with the controls enough to play it very far. I got into the first real town and could tell the quests were about to get better, but I just couldn't stay motivated to play with the awkward controls. What I was seeing so far did not offer me anything I couldn't get somewhere else with better controls. The exception here, of course, is the character customization, which is awesome.

To answer your accusation, I didn't make the video to bolster any claim. I was writing a first impressions piece (not a review). First impressions are formed, well, you get it--first. My first impression was that the combat was pretty lame compared to other titles available. Had I leveled the character to 20 to see the exciting combat, I'd be dealing with second or third impressions.

I don't hate Perfect World. I was just writing honest first impressions. When I do that for a game, I spend about 3 hours with it. I download, install, and play until I have spent 3 hours on the title. In the case of Perfect World, I spent a few minutes each day for 2 weeks just trying to find a place to download it. Some of the mirror links from the download page were invalid. Others led me to a site where I needed to sign up to download, something I did not want to do unless I had to. I finally found the download at FileFront.

After install, I figured I had about 75 minutes of play time left before I had spent my 3 hours on the first impressions. The truth is that after playing for those 75 minutes, I did not care if I never played the game again. Nothing grabbed me and lured me in. That does not mean it is a bad game at all. But in a market saturated with F2P titles, it does not bode well for Perfect World.

Many people would have given up after not being able to find a download. Others would have been turned off by the controls as I was. And I am willing to bet that a lot of gamers would not have played for 75 minutes. My theory is that F2P games have a very short window of time to impress a gamer before they get uninstalled.

Hey, do you have a link to a combat video you want to share with everyone? One that you think shows the power of Perfect World in the mid-game?

Aye - I would love to see some higher level combat. I had a very similar experience to Danny's, but I'd love to see something that's a bit more - "explosive".

Sorry guys, I JUST noticed the responses to my response. You know what...I'll find a good combat video, and if I can't, I'll MAKE one on my lvl 30 magician. I'll post here when I get that together.

I'm guessing this is about a lvl 25 or so werefox and her pet. It's not THE greatest example either, but...it does show a BIT more. I'll keep hunting for something better, because, in my opinion, the magician spells are the most showy and "explosive" looking.

I know every game isn't for everyONE, but personally, I'm really enjoying this game. Although, I do think it has a pretty sharp learning curve with the controls. By about level 15 it got very comfortable.

This video does have pretty good sound quality, so you CAN hear some of the ingame music, which I think is quite lovely. The atmosphere of the game world is one of the biggest draws to me, because it IS truly a beautiful game. Kind of "Guild Wars-ish" but more...uhm...light or bright, or something, while still feeling very soft and lush.
