Op/Ed: Collector's Editions: Seriously Cool or Shelf Ornament
Calling to true geeks everywhere, collector's editions are found for an increasing number of videogame products these days. Coming in big shiny tins, these metal piņatas have a wealth of extras which can include anything from art books to in game items. Are they worth the considerable extra cost? RadarX takes a look at collector's editions and explains why some things are worthwhile, and others are just a passing fancy.

One bonus aspect of a collector's edition I think most people miss is geek cred. That's right, the ability to say you've bought it because you are such a die hard Warhammer fan. To set it upon your trophy shelf with your unopened Aquaman, full size 1950's GI Joe, replica Dr. Who tools, and signed copy of Spawn #1 places you among the elite, and we salute you for it.
I got more value out of the 'extras' in the Vanguard: Saga of Heroes CE (the Keith Parkinson art book and the soundtrack( than i did the actual game. Seriously.
But for me, having been a Warhammer fan since '86, I can't wait to get my grubby little hands on the stuff inside the box. The virtual items are pretty cool, the quests are a great idea, but the art book and graphic novel are things that really sweeten the deal for me.
I'm still searching for my: " /summon real friends ability "
Damn Radar, I'm still laughing.
For me, I want to be at the start of what looks like an awesome game. Most of it is just fluff or fodder to look at while loading the game agreed, but I'll take it. Eighty dollars schmatey dollars, you could waste that at the bar or on dinner in one evening. At least I can get a miniature and some in game stuff....can't wait.
My issue is going to be how do I get some serious game on, whilst raising a two year old daughter, that is the question.
Speaking of, that would be a great post topic, though I am sure it has already been covered. (?)
Remember fellow Dad's--"Breaking a group to rescue a crying baby always creates more in game crying babies."

...and she won't watch over your incoming mother for you either... She spoils all of your fun, hmm?
Well, I'm getting it some for the in-game stuff, but also because the artbook and such interest me... Similar to what Mid said, the different in price is worth a single trip to the movies, or a dinner out... It's relatively insignificant in the long run, and you can get some perks out of it. Not the least of which being definite access to the Open Beta, if you're not already in the Closed, and the Early Launch Access, which will help people get established before the game officially launches.
Generally, the CE seems to just be a way to use price discrimination to get a bit more money from the consumers. However, seeing as its a free choice to get the CE or regular edition, its all good. Those willing and able to pay for it are happy with their choice. Others are happy with the regular game.
For me, the guaranteed Open beta, the early access to the game, the extra quests... it all adds up to be definitely worth it. Even in England where the CE will be costing the equivalent of about $118.
I preordered my CE and I am DEFINITELY excited for the trivial things like the art book and the miniature. This is the first CE of any game I have ever bought so i think it will have a special place on my bookshelves.
Now, I just need to figure out how to balance being a teacher and playing WAR.
