38 Studios: Exclusive Interview with Jason Roberts and Steve Danuser
Over the past year, Ten Ton Hammer has been actively pursuing the story behind 38 Studios, the up and coming MMOG development studio that is working on a yet unnamed fantasy massively multiplayer online game. Up until recently, this has meant discussing things with the executive members of the studio – Brett Close, Curt Schilling, R.A. Salvatore, and Mary Kirchoff to name a few. However, recently the gates were opened and the development team was able to stretch its legs around a few select members of the media. As always, Ten Ton Hammer was the first crew on the scene, and we had an excellent discussion with Steve Danuser and Jason Roberts at this year’s ION Games Conference. We hope you enjoy the first part of the discussion, and make sure you check back in with Ten Ton Hammer for the conclusion!
Quote:
Ten Ton Hammer: When you’re iterating this early on in the experience, do you go through everything with a fairly fine toothed comb and make sure you’re only including the quality experiences into your game?
Jason: We’re pretty meticulous about things. We start off with a core and we build off of that core. We’ll add something on to the core, and we’ll take a step back and see how that affected the entire system and how everything works in concert with each other. If it doesn’t work, you iterate and refine it and do that process all over again. You do that again and again and again until you get it absolutely perfect. You continue to grow the whole thing from there.

Great interview, as always. (You've finally provoked me out of my extended lurk here.) I'm looking forward to the second half. It's encouraging to see people talking about the importance of community building and management, both at the recent conferences and in interviews. I'm very optimistic about what is going on at 38S, and I appreciate the fact that they are waiting until they have something substantial to share with us, before they pull the curtain. Their design philosophy seems to be right on, and they definitely have the talent to back it up.
Also, as the proprietor of one of those way-to-early 38 Studios fansites, I wanted to say that I have never lobbied for inside info (However I'd like to reserve the right to do so in the future).

Keep up the good work folks!
Thanks for the response Grish! I've been a long-time fan of 38 Studios as well - both as a baseball fan and R.A. fan - so I've been hot on their heels for a long time now. Hopefully we can keep bringing you the goodies when they're available.
It's always great to get perspective from different members of the development team. I believe this is an interesting opportunity to follow the development of an MMO, an IP and an entire studio from the ground up. Even though most of the discussions have been philosophical in nature, it isn't very often that you get to see a company work out their philosophy from the very beginning.
It would be cool to hear from more artists and designers and what drew them to 38 Studios. There are a lot of great personalities over there, I'd like to see a Travis McGeathy interview sometime, if possible.
Of course, we are rabidly awaiting new concept art (how cool was that centaur?!), but we understand these things take time. Thanks for keeping us posted!

The McGeathy interview is slated for whenever he actually gets himself settled into his new position. You shouldn't have to wait too much longer, hopefully.
how, lol, hasnt it only been around for less than a year or so?
