Guilds Preview with Josh Drescher and Christian Bales
Everybody likes playing games with other folks. Even if you're running around solo it's always more fun if you have someone to chat with in the process. That's where Guilds come in. Guilds have been an important part of at least every MMOG since EverQuest, if not before and Warhammer Online will be no different. Even being a heavily influenced PvP style game, EA Mythic is placing a lot of time and effort into making guilds appealing to the average player. Last week, Ten Ton Hammer's own Garret Fuller talked to Josh Dreshcer and Christian Bales about what people can expect from guilds in WAR. What did he find out? You'll have to read his article and see for yourself!
Quote:
Guilds have become a major part of MMO game play. Players have organized guilds that now span across different games and game genres. There are hardcore guilds who try to dominate game content as well as casual guilds who enjoy having fun and exploring an MMO with much less intensity. Warhammer Online is prepared to help both types of guilds in their game. As MMOs grow more sophisticated we have learned what works and what does not work for guilds.
I can't believe nobody has posted anything on this. Fantastic read by the way. Something I found extremely interesting though was this comment "Guilds will eventually have tactics they can use and place on their banners", I wonder what this means. Place tactics on our banners?!!
Perhaps they are like trophies and we put them on the banner when we get them? A a pro-guild guy I am very curious to see what the guild system ends up being. I consider it just as cool a feature as city siege/assaults and public quests.

I think I am right there along side ya. I was thinking maybe the "tactics" for it would be something like increasing the hp of a keep door or something, which would have been nice in DAoC.
In the first and 2nd edition rules of WFB you could purchase magical banners for your units (dunno if they included this in the boxed editions). Perhaps it would act something like this? Achieve guild lvl 7 and have access to a banner that slows enemy movement in a 10 metre radius?

Awesome. Now make someone carry it into battle instead of his weapons. Carrying the regimental standard is a high honor usually given to the strongest and the bravest.
How about regimental musicians? Have Orcs playing war-drums or Squig-pipes to give everyone within a certain range an instant morale boost!
Josh and Christian both explained that running a guild in an MMO should not feel like a full time job. Guild leaders will have plenty of tools at their disposal to support their guilds along the way. WAR wants to give guild leaders the tools to schedule events, give rewards to strong members, and make life as easy as possible.
While I appreciate their efforts on this part, clearly Josh and Christian have never ran a guild. No amount of "tools" will save you from the flood of whispers of complaints every time you log in. For everything else, you delegate.

True, but I would like as many options and tools as possible to make what you can't delegate that much easier to handle.
I'm hoping this brings back the "pride" aspect of guilds that WoW lost. I want to feel proud and show off my guilds achievements and goals.
I like everything they are currently doing. I mean, like you said, no amount of features is going to make a hardcore guild not play out like a full time job but you have to really enjoy all the tiny things they are doing to make it cooler to run one.
Oh yes I'm hopeful about it, that was more of a lighthearted jab at the statement itself. The more guild tools the better, especially if you can wave around a big banners with a phallus on it (just kidding - sort of). Its enough to give it a shot, though I won't have time to run a guild again.
Hey Ibacai! You got room at launch?
