One of the hot topics of the last few weeks has been that of the RP-PvE server debate. Some of the community feel it is a needed aspect for fostering a healthy Role-playing community, while others adamantly oppose it. This week we take a look at what all the fuss is about in the editorial, "RP-PvP and RP-PvE: Why All the Hate?"
Quote:
If the abbreviated title isn’t enough to give you a nose bleed the topic may be. One of the hottest topics raging across the Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventure (AoC) official forums is that of the Role-play (RP) Player vs Environment (PvE) types wanting their own server to enjoy a Role-play atmosphere without the fear or worry of having a level 50 come and gank them while they are sight seeing in Hyboria. The loudest opposition to this band of Role-players is not that of another play-style, but that of more Role-players.
What do you guys think? Should there be a RP-PvE server or not? Cast your vote in this week's poll and discuss.

If you've been a part of those threads over on the official forums then there is no way you could really mistake my view, which is pretty much in line with Martuk's and Khandrak's view to a large degree.
Having the extra server hurts noone. If you sit back and try to take an objective look at the agruments against it, you will see they are composed of nothing but opinions of how that individual poster views roleplay should be done (in this case including the PvP server rulesets with regard to attackability). You will also note that nothing is stopping them from continuing to role a character on the already confirmed RP PvP servers and indulging in their view of RP.
As such, you are only left with bitterness and hatred as their reasons for arguing against something that, frankly, will never touch their lives. It's a bit disheartening really, as their only real reason is "I just don't want you to have it" or in one other individuals case, "I just want you to admit RP without a PvP+ server is inferior to RP on a PvP+ server...". In essence, it's their idea of fun and all else be damned.
I can only genuinely hope that Gaute, Erling (who seems like a smart money conscious guy to me) and the rest truly realize that giving an RP set of rules and code of conduct just to the PvP RPing group (which I'm not against at all) and not giving it to the PvEing side (whom of which many will still PvP some in the Border Kingdoms, etc.) can very easily and will most definetly be considered a slap in the face to many. It is in essence saying "Since you don't want to wrap your every action in game in PvP possibility you are not a real priority to us."
While there may not be that many RP PvErs on the official boards, and frankly I can't really blame them, there are many out there watching now that AoC is this close to launch and the advertising is kicking in. Ultimately it's up to FC to decide whether they want to view/treat this group as second-class consumers.

I go back to what i said in the article. Choice is a good thing and the more you have, the happier people are.
I disagree - I think people will actually float to the PvE servers simply because of fear. Fear of the unknown. Fear of dying. Fear of PvP. You make a RP-PvE server and all of the RP will go on in there.

Oh I dunno. Looking at all the PvE PvP RP server threads popping up the last few weeks it looks like they might have plenty of both. Then again if post were acid half the RP player base would have melted away at this point.
WoW has plenty of servers for both, and each has a pretty thick player base. Grant it they have 10 million people but that's beside the point.

I'm not an RP guy, I am a PVP guy(when I have a few too many brewskis during a raid I have been known to start up VENT RP sessions, they only last a couple min usually, lol). I always play pvp servers. I really don't understand why people get upset about getting ganked. In that other game I played it just meant a bit of a run, and generally they guy was gone when I got back. (I was often the lvl 70 killing the lvl 23's I came across, however I would leave after the initial kill) If you RP I think you can enjoy that realism. What I never understood is why people allowed themselves to be griefed. If I got killed more than two or three times by the same character just waiting for me to come back I would log off, jump on another character for 20ish min, log back in and having succumbed to boredom the griefer would be gone. maybe I don't have the RP mindset, and maybe my argument is more PVP vs PVE but I think that's really the substance of the debate here.
I say let them have it, but could see two reasons not to.
1) Not enough people. It would not pay for the electricity if only 4 people wanted in the dang thing.
2) Strategic advantage. If a RP-PVE server was sparsely populated (especially in the pvp borderlands) it would give people the opportunity to have the unmitigated opportunity to explore and find things that may be very difficult to find on the other servers. In Eve people used the test servers to gain a great deal of information about enemy positions and systems.

Well, I disagree here. It's simple to play the "fear" card. AoC isn't the first MMO. Many gamers have had ample experience in the host of other games out there. They've played on PVP servers and they've played on PVE servers. They know what they want based on the experience they have interacting with the different communities in the past.

I have played on servers where its free for all pvp and to me it sucked big time. Not everyone on this earth has extremely fast internet connections or pc's. To me, i would always be half way or more dead before i ever became aware i was being pvp'd.
My greatest lag is and always has been when other folks are near by, as i could survive fairly well in pve enviroments, but came to pvp i was at a distinct disadvantage(sp) as i would be lagging 2 to 10 seconds, depending on where it happens.
Everyone knows basically the first five seconds in any pvp almost always decides the outcome, specially if person is a cloth wearer.
I am currently in a beta testing of another game where its rp-pvp/pve, and so far other then some folks being decent about it, all i have see are hi level folks killing newbs, just cause they can. If thats what pvp is all about, i want nothing to do with it. I come home to relax and i play to relax and forget about real world, not to deal with jerks, who get there kicks by being bully's or rude to others.
