While rumors have certainly be swirling around the Internet about the upcoming Bioware being based on the Knights of the Old Republic, Carl Cascone addresses the idea that Bioware has just as much background in the D&D campaign setting, The Forgotten Realms. In his editorial, Carl gives some compelling reasons for a possible Forgotten Realms MMO rather than a Star Wars based Bioware title.
Despite the hopes of many Star Wars fans, the recent contest announcement by Bioware points the spotlight towards a Forgotten Realms MMORPG, and not a competing Star Wars title. Judging by the reaction to Star Wars Galaxies, if a KotOR MMORPG was done correctly, it would serve the death knell to the older Galaxies title. People play SW Galaxies because there is no other Star Wars MMORPG available.
After reading the article, do you think a Forgotten Realms MMO is possible? Is Bioware going to shock the community by building a D&D MMO? What would happen to Turbine's DDO?
As much as I would LOOOVE for that to happen, it doesn't seem likely based on what Kevin Lynch, the moderator at the bioware website said.
"BioWare is developing an MMO, but it won't be based on a licensed product like the Forgotten Realms. Read the Press Release about it.

If a new Bioware MMO does not revolve around a known lincenced game/lore/pnp/whatnot, I feel relief.
The reasoning behind my opinion is easy to explain, if you got a already definied seting - like the Forgotten Realms or Star Trek and so on - you are more or less bound to said enviroment and with pnp games also the rulesets.
That must not mean it would be a bad thing, but you are forced into limits if you dont want to ignore the lore.
Not that I wont mind a MMO with a definied lore like ...as example "Vampire"...
Speculation is fine and dandy, its fun to discuss possibilities and speak about the pro`s and con`s ...in the end its still fruitless, till we hear from Bioware what they have on the shelf.
I hope it does not include elfes/dwarfs/goblins/orcs/gnomes/idiots ...geting a bit feed up with those.
I curious, what the next grains from the rumor mill provide
Any speculation is pretty rumor-filled, but I'm almost 100% sold on the KOTOR MMOG anymore. Unless they're making an Indiana Jones MMOG.....now THAT would be interesting!
As much as I love KOTOR, I don't want a KOTOR MMO(yet anyway) I would like to see the KOTOR story line end with KOTORIII made by Obsidian instead of Bioware's MMO... On the other hand I don't want it to be one of the many common fantasy MMOs because I'm sick of them.
I'm playing Hellgate: London right now and I'm loving the part Sci-fi part fantasy world they have, I'd love to see an MMORPG like that... Ah well, BioWare must be pretty close to announcing their MMO by now
Most of the people who started the KoTOR Rumor are SWG vets hoping that this great kick butt SW MMO comes out which kills SWG and reins supreme.
With all the speculation I was thinking about this. Even if this is a Star Wars MMO will it hold a candle to the sandbox style which all SWGers seem to enjoy?
The NGE was rumored to be LucasArts driven and looking at how much the NGE tried to make SWG a version of WoW do you really think LA is going to let Bio-Ware take another stab at a in depth MMO like SWG?
Rumors or not all I have to say is Starcraft MMO
I am thinking this LA/Bio-Ware partnership might just be a KoTOR 3 game or an Indiana Jones game but for consoles.
The MMO is anyones best guess but another Fantasy Game on the market will not do well me thinks

the NGE was driven by LA because the CU was not Starwarsy enough for the hard-core fans, Say LA forced SOE into making the NGE but it was SOE that made the NGE so crappy... they should of done a better job

Well its not KOTORIII because Bioware have said many times that they are not going to make KOTORIII, if anyone will it will be Obsidian.
But you could be right on the Indiana Jones game, it could go alongside with the new movie... You see, if you rule out the latest LA/Bioware agreement then a KOTOR MMO seems like the least likely. but then again... Bioware are known for making RPGs with deep and strong storylines... I can't see that in Indiana Jones

Personally I think SOE had little to know knowledge of the NGE. If SOE was developing the NGE they never would have done done that Squad Leader patch 1 to 2 months before ToOW. I think LA just showed up one day with a build and said, check this out!. Seeing what SOE has done to SWG in the past 6 months I am almost convinced that LA was the driving force behind the NGE.
For arguments sake, lets say I am 100% right on this and LA was the driving force on the NGE.
LA is not going to give Bio-Ware loads of room to develop a sandbox type MMO. SWG has become a whipping boy for what not to do with an MMO. I dont see an in-depth KoTOR MMO coming out of this. I think a KoTOR MMO that comes out will be fun but not like SWG was.

I dont know, I think Harrison said a while back he would not make another Indy movie and here we are. I know Bio-Ware said no go on KoTORIII in the past but this could change with $$. Plus I heard somewhere Bio-Ware turned down KoTOR 2 because they did not want to deal with LA again on a Star Wars Project.
My thinking is the MMO and the LA things are just 2 seperate deals Bio-Ware is dealing with. Bio-Ware has a MMO in dev and maybe the LA deal is a Indy game?
All I know is every thing I have ever speculated on in the rumor mill turns out to be 100% wrong. Since I started thinking its a KoTOR MMO or an Indy game, odds are its The Forgotten Realms MMO

hehe yeah, the chances are that the LA/BioWare deal is nothing but a cell phone game
The point is that the LA/Bioware deal says they have agreed to begin making a new game... but the Bioware MMO has already been worked on for over a year now, Could they really be talking about the same thing?
Ah well, whatever happens, I just hope its not another fantasy MMO.

hehe or maybe a Wii game? I would want to see an Indy game where you use the Nunchuck as a whip. Maybe put in a bonus game where you get to play cards as Short-round

AMEN!!!
If I had money I would rent a billboard near Bio-Ware in Austin with the words
"not another fantasy MMO"
