Oh heck yeah, I remember the first time I encountered one of these events up in ButcherBlock Mountains. several GMs had an area kinda roped off from the mobs they were spawning
{mostly consisting of the undead} from getting out to the other low lvl areas.
Anyway once you stepped into this area it was craziness ensued 100-fold, and was extremely difficult to survive for long, and you still took an XP penalty when you died. For those that stuck it out which lasted several hours the GMs were giving away special fabled gear they were making up on the spot by request of what you wanted on it, but nothing too overly powerful. Still these items were a one-of-kind, and extremely rare with tags on them as well. Only a handful of them were rewarded to I think 1-2 groups that survived the event.
Sadly I think the biggest reason these live events with special rewards aren't done anymore is because of the masses of players that would say,
"well I wasn't high enough level and couldn't participate" {WoW already does this a lot} so they start shouting foul play, or on-noes,
"that person has something better than me from an event I wasn't able to participate in cause I was offline"....etc etc Guess this is why major events are now in holiday form mostly and take place over several weeks or less to allow everyone a chance to participate and reap the rewards.
{again sadly the rewards really suck these days too!} I wish more super rare gear was distributed like in the past that defined that you won a special live event...screw all the tards that would QQ about it....as there is tons of things you're never gonna see or earn anyway....sheesh
