WoW was great fun 1 - 60, but I am not in the position to be in a Raid guild, so most content in WoW 60+ is closed to me, or I might still be playing. This has left me with pretty much nothing that is satisfying game-wise.
I assume that you are aware that an expansion was just released for that game that allows you to solo from levels 60-70? (As well as a race with new content for level 1-20?)
The whole idea of doing away with global chat, and keeping it regional at its largest is the best way to keep the world feeling huge. The distances discourage jsut "jumping a ship and be there in a minute" for a distant group.
Yes. And I think I appreciate that concept a bit more now than I did when I first heard about it. The problem is going to be from the stanpoint of time commitment. I have many RL friends who play these games and when we meet for a dungeon crawl in WoW is usually about a 10-20 minutes process to get everyone together and at the site. Sometimes even that feels too long.
I can see that in Vanguard -- even with everyone on the same continent -- between the long hearth stone timers and the wide geography of this game -- getting everyone together could easily take three times as long.
Obviously, that is the price you pay for more immersion. But at some I wonder if convenience will trump immersion -- particularly if my wife starts to feel like the game is taking up too much of my time.
Thats why you and your RL friends should create a player town or a grouping of houses in the same area. That way you log on in the area and can immediately begin adventuring... when you grow out of that area, and want to explore a different part of the world, you sell off your plot of land and restart a new player town close to the next area...

Yes, I get that. But even still, without teleporting (or frequent hearthing) and with such a large space, even a group in the same general area will take some time to converge on a given dungeon. Its just inevitable that someone will have a long schelp. (And yes, caravaning might ease this a bit).
2) Not only is the map bigger than WoW but the vertical distance in the game is substantially greater. I spent some time climbing up into a mountain range and was surprised at how tall they were and how deep the crevasses and valleys were. Picture some about 10 times as tall as the mountains that IF are in and you’ll get the picture.
The Sigil devs spoke about this when I was in San Diego this past October for Vanguard Gamers' Day. Vanguard has already been built to expand in all directions--not just outward, but above and below, too. There's a top secret sort of Atlantian underwater city supposedly in the works for future expansions. There's room for cities in the clouds and cities under the earth. It's pretty impressive to hear just how hugely expandable this game is. What we're experiencing now really is the tip of the iceberg.
I think people don't often fully grasp the potential of Vanguard. It is an impressively ambitious game, and it really does have a solid core foundation. I'm eager to see what future expansions will hold.

This response got me more pumped for Vanguard in two paragraphs then reading several months of their press releases.
I just got a message about a live event in the beta tomorrow. Do you know anything about live events after the game launch?
I have the same thoughts, I do realise that Vanguard has an incredible amount of Potential here.
I also happily accept that its an MMO, its NEVER finished, let alone in BETA. I also know all too well that LAUNCH DAYS ARE A NIGHTMARE. Both for Dev and Player.
Im definetly not one of the "I will buy it in 6 months time because .......... isnt perfect yet"
However theres an incredible amount of things that are completely unpolished atm.
Some are things that most other games have done but Vanguard havent, basic things such as the Chat windows, Chat options, alot of other UI issues. Just for example. Tiny things that other games have all done and were relatively polished on there release days that are still very "RAW" in Vanguard atm.
Ive already brought the game, its fun, it has incredible potential and ill be in it for a LONG time, You would just think there would be someone there that would go "Hmmmm every single player is going to use CHAT, ALOT. Maybe ill spend some time of this 6 year development polishing that so its done and out of the way"
I was in EQ Beta, and it was about the same or worse. They had a lot of dumb stuff like typos everywhere, and when they went live the servers kept crashing, etc..
I think everyone knows this game is not going to have perfect polishing at launch, but I am extremely confident that Brad and the team will make it happen. They have proven this time and again with EQ.

So you want to see how deep the rabbit hole goes, eh?

Yeah, I hit 60 and quit WoW a long time ago. I returned one time, but there was just nothing to do but sit in IF and spam "Rogue LFG" all night long. I also had a hard time finding a guild with like-minded gamers. 'Guild' was just a word. Most people in your 'guild' couldn't be bothered to group with you.
I spent the majority of the game duoing with my brother's dwarf warrior. The few decent pick up groups I experienced filled out the rest of the way to 60...,after that there was just no content for casual pick-ups or solo. I could have gotten a bit more life out of the game, but I am not into PVP.

I know Sigil is big on them. There's one planned for the end of beta that should be a lot of fun, but I'm not at liberty to talk about it just yet. When I know all the full details, we'll let the rest of you all know.
