Requiem has been an interesting experience for me. I've been playing the beta for the last few weeks and I have to say that I love the dark, brooding atmosphere of the game.
The question is "Can gore sell a game?"
The short answer is yes I believe, the dynamics of the game engine and the boosted blood, and flying body parts will certainly catch the eye...though it will take more to "keep" players playing and returning for more.
I believe that Requiem has a good foundation on which to start the process of moving the game forward.
The 3 races seem a bit limited but the fact that you ultimately have 16 Classes to possibly develop help quit a bit. I was glad to read that more are being planned/developed.
What I think would (and hopefully will) help the game the most is a more flushed out Quest system that revolves around the main Storyline of the game. There seems to be too few quests in general and too many of those are your typical go here kill 20 of these type critters.
That makes the game feel more of a grind and less of a story and game.
Also better use of environmental sounds, setting and music could do more to bring about a feeling of "horror" imo Though I admit that's easier said than done. It just seems that there could be more places, that because of sound and lighting and mob placement, could invoke feelings more true to those of horror.
It's my opinion that while more graphic animations and bloody carnage is in a way "very cool" and a nice change of pace...it's not "horror"
Horror to me is more a feeling brought about more by sound and setting than gore. I believe what scares us the most is that which is just beyond sight, what we don't see is more frightening than anything we can actually visualize. Thus to move the game more into the horror genre my suggestion would be to do more with sound and lighting in some areas of the game.
Have some dungeons that are more about isolating the player and create a sense of peril and unknown through dim lighting and environmental sounds and mood enhancing music.
Horror is wondering what "might" pop up in front of your face at any moment and wondering IF you'll be able to react in time to save yourself when it does...horror is not running into a large hall and indiscriminately killing a group of creatures.
IMO
But like I said, I feel the game is a very good starting point. It all depends on the vision the developers have and the type of game Requiem was originally intended to be.
Some more in-depth development of storyline quests would help give the game and world more meaning.
I'm excited to see how it develops, I certainly plan on playing through the beta and into it's eventual launch and onward.
Even as it is atm I find it fun and exciting...I just hope that the development team moves it forward so that it can realize all it's potential.
Definitely a game to keep your eyes on and play if possible.
Regards & Good Hunting All!
