38 Studios: An Interview with Brett Close on the BigWorld License
The announcement that the 38 Studios team has licensed the BigWorld engine comes as the first piece of news that the press has had in awhile concerning the development of the MMOG project code-named Copernicus. To analyze this move further, Cody "Micajah" Bye had a chat with the president of 38 Studios, Brett Close, to find out more about the deal.
Quote:
To start, I asked Close why 38 Studios chose BigWorld out of all the technologies currently available on the market. According to Close, BigWorld has exceptional server-side technology and great MMO-specific tools. "They’re highly licensed and have delivered products," he added. "When it comes down to the type of technology we need in terms of load balance and robust server-side capability for an MMO platform and backbone, BigWorld is peerless... and they're great guys.”
yeah its gunna help them big time. MMO's are to large of a project and any where you can save time and money is good.
I cant wait to see what kind of game they put out. Heres to a home run!

I think this is a smart move, using a tech/eng that is tested and where they can dive right into acually building the game.
Isn't R.A Salvatore doing the writing for 38 Studio? Just that fact alone has me excited on this project.
Cody please keep us informed about this promising Studio
Yes, R.A. is doing the writing for the game. After talking with him at length about it, you should be excited.
I'll absolutely keep you informed - I'm incredibly excited about the entire project. Look through all of our previous materials on the studio to see just how excited I am.
As far as options go - I'm guessing it's the sort of things that are already integrated into the BigWorld technology suite. VOIP, SpeedTree, and a whole list of other integrated features are part of the technology suite, along with a number of things that I'm sure only the tech heads would get. By licensing BigWorld, 38 Studios can choose to use those options in their game or modify the tech to do their own sort of processes. It's just an "option" on whether they use all the available tech or not.
As far as back end, server-side capability, this means the correlation between what you see on the screen and the equations and algorithms that are taking placing behind the scenes on the "server-side". Anything that doesn't happen on your computer is "server-side" while the stuff that does process on the home PC is "client-side". By giving themselves good server-side capability, 38 Studios will be able to reduce lag and generally kick the action up a notch compared to what would happen if the server-side tech wasn't solid.
