It's no secret that one of the biggest draws of the upcoming game, Age of Conan, is its promise for a unique and robust combat system. For years MMOG players have been using the same types of systems hashed and rehashed. Machail discusses the details of Funcom's planned system and its potential impact on today's market.

With this new approach, all attacks will be in real time. This means if a player chooses to swing their sword, they will be able to do so - anytime, anywhere. Where they swing their sword will also be up to the player. They can aim for their opponent’s legs to cripple them, or slice at their head to deal the death blow.

Good read. I think AOC has a great combat system in development, but I think one of their biggest obstacles will be overcoming latency issues. That is part of the reason real time combat is avoided in a lot of MMOGs. You might dodge an attack on your screen only to find out a few seconds later you were actually dealt a death blow. This aspect could very well become a frustrating tool if not implemented correctly.
If Funcom can overcome that. I think they will have created one heck of an edge over their competitors.

That's a good point, but I'm not sure how different hitting different keys for different attacks would be to clicking different icons. I'm no programmer though, but a good thought.

Its not really in the grand scheme of things, but reactions are harder to gage for example. Age of Conan looks like you will need to try and actually avoid attacks and there is where I think Funcom will have a challenge. Now I could be wrong, but that is how it seems to me.
I am keeping my fingers crossed for success.

In this it is stated that:
"Ranged players of Age of Conan will actually have to string the bow, and take aim at the enemy whether from a first-person point of view or an "over the shoulder" camera angle. "
Is this info still correct? I recall seeing auto attacks when firing normal shots and that you only get the crosshair when "in sniper mode". It was in a beta leak, but never the less

That's kind of what I meant by over-the-shoulder. It's in a few of the vids out there. Still current? As far as I know, but like all things in pre-launch it's subject to change at any time, so it's entirely possible I missed an update.

Alright. Got it I got the impression that you meant it was like that all the time.
Auto aim and shoot should be a big 'no' in my opinion, as it supposedly isn't an auto strike. But well, I guess I still am a bit stuck in wow when it comes to these things.
Gief beta dammit!

It may not be Soul Calibur Online just yet but it's certainly a step in the right direction. I'm eager to see just how far it can be taken in the future.
